Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like
children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven." Matthew
18:3
I have four
nieces. Two of them are still babies. The other two are seven and three. It
is amazing observing them because I get to see qualities that we all have in
their purest form. They still possess virtues that have yet to be corrupted
and stained by time and experience.
A child has the unique ability to believe in anything and trusts that the
person telling them is definitely without a doubt telling the truth. I mean
things like Santa Claus who travels the entire world in a single night
dropping gifts off at each child's house is indeed a real possibility to a
child. As is the prospect of a finding money under her pillow in place of a
recently loss tooth placed there by none other than the tooth fairy. A child
can look at her father and know without a doubt that he is the biggest and
strongest man in the world. She knows that when he says she is safe and
holds her in his arms that there is nothing that can prove him wrong.
A child sees all things and people in their purest and simplest forms
because they themselves are in their purest and simplest form. To them a dog
is a dog, not a golden retriever or poodle. If it is anything more than a
dog it is a big dog or a small dog. They see children as children. They
don't pay too much attention to racial background, ethnicity, or religious
affiliation. They may notice a difference but that soon fades when they
realize that they share similar interests or like the same game or toy. They
share the same ideology, to be children.
A child knows how to take direction. They know their parents have their best
interest at heart and only want the best from them, even if it doesn't seem
like that is the case at times. They also know that disobedience comes with
a price to be paid. The cost of disobedience could be anything from time out
the feared spanking. In that sense disobedience also comes with a lesson.
I want to be like a child again. I want to be able to crawl up in the
Fathers arms and know that I am safe because He said so. I want to be able
to say that my Father is the biggest and strongest man in the world and know
that I am right. I want to be able to believe all that He has to say to me
and realize that He has no reason to lie and trust that all He says will
come to pass. I want to be able to look at the people around me and just see
that fact that they are my brothers and sisters in Christ and not care about
ethnicity, gender or other discriminating barriers. I want to do what my
Father tells me to do because I know he holds my future and my best interest
at heart.
I have aspired to be many things in my life and have set goals to help me
reach those aspirations. Of all though, my greatest aspiration is to become
like a child when it comes to trusting God.
