A disciple is
basically defined as a student or follower of some doctrine or teacher.
A
disciple of Jesus Christ is a follower of Jesus Christ who is actively
practicing all that Jesus taught and commanded.
Based on Jesus teachings and instructions to His disciples the
characteristics of a disciple can be broken down into three areas: love,
lifestyle and labor.
Love
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind and with all your strength." Mark 12:30 (NIV)
"The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment
greater than these." Mark 12:31 (NIV)
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you
must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you
love one another." John 13:34-35 (NIV)
Lifestyle
"But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the
children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs
to such as these." Mark 10:14 (NIV)
"Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8:11 (NIV)
"If you continue in my word then you are my disciples indeed and you will
know the truth and the truth will make you free." John 8:31 (NIV)
"This is how you should pray: Our father in heaven, hallowed by your name.
Your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we have also forgiven our
debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)
Labor
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
